The Gentle MAX® Laser – Used for hair removal, treatment of leg and facial veins as well as fine lines, wrinkles and skin tightening.

The Gentle MAX® Laser by Candela is a versatile laser capable of treating fair to dark and tanned skin types. It is used to permanently reduce unwanted hair growth and can be used on many areas of the body, most commonly upper lip/chin, legs, underarm, chest, back and bikini. It is fast and efficient. It is an FDA-approved cosmetic device.

Sideburns - Before & AfterThe Process - Laser hair removal is the newest technology to provide permanent hair reduction. Specific wavelengths of laser light or intense pulsed light are used to destroy hair roots. Most experts feel this is better than any other current technology. It is faster, and it has fewer complications than other methods. Some hair reduction occurs initially, but maximum hair loss may not be seen for several weeks after each treatment. In general, multiple treatments will be needed depending on the area being treated and on what percentage of the hair is actively growing.

Underarms - Before & AfterDarker hair has more melanin and is more easily removed. People with dark skin and light hair are difficult to treat. The average number of treatments can vary anywhere from four to six treatments (sometimes more) and varies from person to person. The treatments are usually scheduled every 5 to 6 weeks to allow optimal hair growth in the area being treated.

Commonly Asked Laser Questions

Does it Hurt? - Relative to waxing, electrolysis, plucking, and ripping, laser hair removal does not hurt to that degree. Some patients may experience a stinging sensation when the laser is pulsed. This stinging should not last more than 5 seconds after the light flash of the laser. This discomfort is minimized by the laser's Dynamic Cooling Device™ which protects the upper layers of the skin with a cooling burst of cryogen.

What do you mean by permanent hair reduction? - Permanent hair reduction is defined as a long-term, stable reduction in the number of hairs re-growing after treatment. Permanent hair reduction is not the equivalent to complete hair loss. A certain percentage of the hairs treated will not re-grow after each treatment. Based on findings from recent studies, the average patient will experience a minimum of 60% to 80% permanent hair reduction with virtually no side effects. Different cycles in follicle (hair root) growth make it impossible to destroy all hair in one treatment. Only hair that is in the growing phase can be destroyed; this is why it usually takes four to six treatments to achieve a good result. Removal of all hair may never be accomplished, but there should be permanent reduction.

Laser Hair Removal (Photoepilation)

What is Photoepilation? - Epilation is hair removal. Photoepilation is the newest technology to provide permanent hair reduction. Specific wavelengths of laser light or intense pulsed light are used to destroy hair roots. Most authorities feel this is better than any other current technology. It is faster, and it has fewer complications than other methods. Some hair loss occurs initially, but maximum hair loss may not be seen for several weeks after each treatment. In general, multiple treatments will be needed depending on the site.

What are the side effects? - Fortunately, there are few side effects. In the first hour, treated skin may develop redness and swelling around the hair shaft. This responds quickly to a cool ice pack and aloe vera lotion. Rarely, blistering will occur, but this also responds to ice and aloe vera. Permanent scarring is extememly rare. Very dark skin can become hypopigmented (turn lighter), and lighter shades can become hyperpigmented (darker). Hyperpigmentation usually fades in 3 to 6 months. Excessive swelling is also unusual but should it occur it should subside within 3 to 7 days. If skin becomes fragile at the treatment site, avoid makeup and rubbing the area. Of course, lack of hair removal could be called an unwanted side effect.

What should I do before the visit? - For the best results, avoid sun or tanning 4 to 6 weeks before treatment. If you have tanned recently, you should not undergo photoepilation. There is a danger of overheating the treatment area because of darker pigment in the skin. Hair on the area to be treated must be shaved within 24 hours of the treatment. Remove your makeup before the treatment and keep your skin clean. Tell the doctor if you start any medications; some can make you more susceptible to burning with treatment.

What will be done at the visit? - At the first visit the doctor will evaluate you and determine the correct light setting for your treatments. This will take about 30 minutes. You may receive some small “test spot” treatments. The first treatment can be scheduled with the receptionist after your consultation visit. Payment will need to be made at the time of your treatments. Fees will be charged based on the size, number and locations of the areas treated.

How should I care for treated skin? - Gentle washing and the use of an aloe vera gel are generally sufficient.

Laser Vein & Wrinkles - Don't Be Embarrassed By Those Unsightly Vessels Anymore

Many people are embarrassed by the appearance of spider veins on the face or legs. Spider veins are actually dilated or stretched blood vessels that appear on the legs, not "broken" blood vessels, as is commonly thought. Their precise cause is unknown, but it is thought that heredity, excessive standing, weight gain, hormonal changes and pregnancy may be some of the causes.

Laser technology has become an important factor in the treatment of vascular deformities such as hemangiomas, port wine stains, and spider veins. When the laser is placed over the veins, laser energy causes the spider veins to coagulate and shrink. The Gentle MAX® Laser can be used to treat red and purple spider veins on both the face and the legs. The facial veins appear to melt away like magic from under your eyes.

Most patients require 2 to 3 treatments spaced over 3 to 6 months

Turn Back the Clock - Laser treatments can be used to remove fine lines and wrinkles and return your skin to its youthful and healthy appearance.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) Skin Rejuvenation – Reduce age spots, redness, and improve skin texture.

Intense Pulsed Light EquipmentWhat does Intense Light Treat? - The IPL provides skin rejuvenation by treating aging and sun-damaged skin. It can treat a number of brown and red pigmented skin problems including age and sunspots, Melasma, freckles, facial veins and Rosacea. The IPL can also be used for acne treatments, leg veins and skin toning.

How does it work? - Intense pulsed light treatments use a broad spectrum of high-energy light to treat the pigmented areas. The light energy is absorbed by the pigment, melanin, which causes this pigment to be released from the cells. This released pigment can then come to the surface and exfoliates off. The process may take a few weeks to be completed. The treatment for red flushing or veins may be immediate or may also take a few weeks to complete.

Does it hurt? - For most people there is minimal discomfort. Cold compresses or anesthetic creams may be used; however most patients do not require them.

What will I look like after the procedure? - Many people do not look very different immediately after the procedure. You may be a little pink/red and puffy, or notice that brown areas are darker but this should subside in 1-7 days. Your skin may feel tight or as if you hard been out in the sun or wind.

What are the risks? - As with any high-energy light based therapy it is best to avoid sun exposure before and after treatments for best results. The risks of light based therapy include thermal injury and skin pigment changes. You will be asked to use a daily sun block.

Who can be treated? - People with dark or very tan skin should not have intense light therapy treatments. It is safe to use on light skin.

Do I need a consultation? - Yes, We need to do a consultation. We need to be sure you would benefit from the therapy and that there are no reasons not to perform the treatment. Many times we can do your procedure the same day if you choose to.

Who performs my treatment? - Your treatment will be performed by Dr. Peggy Gregory or by a licensed aesthetician that works with the doctor.

Botox® -  Reveal a more youthful appearance by treating active lines and wrinkles of the forehead and around the eyes.

Botox® Cosmetic is a purified protein administered in a simple non-surgical procedure that temporarily improves the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines between the brows in people aged 18 to 65.

"Dynamic" wrinkles occur when we smile, laugh, or frown and the delicate muscles underlying the skin contract. In cosmetic denervation, botulinum toxin (“Botox®”) is injected into these tiny muscles. Botulinum toxin works by weakening these facial muscles, smoothing out the overlying skin. Untreated facial muscles contract normally, allowing facial expression to be unaffected.

The Process - Botox® injection, known as cosmetic denervation, is a safe and simple procedure. A small amount of diluted Botox® is injected with a very fine needle into several locations of the muscles of the face. (Particularly the area of the frown lines of the forehead and the crow’s feet lateral to the eyes). Because the needle is so fine and only a small amount is injected at each site, the pain associated with the injections is usually tolerable without anesthesia. We try to minimize the discomfort by applying cold compresses before each area is treated. The medicine stings during injection and has been compared to the sting of an insect bite, but clears rapidly within minutes. You will be able to drive and engage in your normal daily activities immediately after your injections.

A small number of people will have some temporary bruising on the skin at some injection sites, which fade over several days. Foundation can be applied immediately if this occurs. Otherwise there will be no visible signs of your treatment.

Botox® is NOT recommended for the following:

  • Persons allergic to human albumin or Botulinum toxin.
  • Pregnant or lactating women
  • Those with neurological disorders such as myasthenia gravis
  • Those being treated at the same time with tissue fillers (collagen)

Commonly Asked Botox Questions

Are there any side effects? - Mild, temporary bruising may occur. Very slight droopiness of the upper eyelid occurs in about 2% of people who have their frown lines injected. About 5% of people who have their foreheads injected immediately above their eyebrows may notice this effect. A much smaller number of people will notice slight asymmetry of the lower face after injection of the crow’s feet muscles. These effects are usually not noticed by others and fully recover after 3 to 5 weeks. An extremely rare side effect, temporary double vision has been reported in the literature. To minimize the possibility of such rare side effects, please be sure to follow the post treatment instructions.
A very small percentage of people do not have much effect from the treatment. A rare patient may even develop antibodies to the Botulinum toxin and develop resistance to response over time. Usually, just the opposite occurs; they respond more to the same dose as time goes on.

What kind of results may I expect? - If dynamic wrinkles are making you look older and more "serious," cosmetic denervation can smooth these out and give you a more youthful and rested appearance. However, this treatment will not improve the more common “static” wrinkles that are unrelated to facial muscle contraction, nor does it improve loose or sagging skin. Results are typically seen within 2 to 10 days of the treatment. (Most patients achieve 60% to 90% improvement in wrinkles in 3 to 14 days). The effects may last 6 weeks to 6 months. (Typically effects last 3 to 4 months). Occasionally, there is a muscle that does not respond, and a “touch –up” may be needed in 2 to 3 weeks.

How long do the results last? - Initially, most people require a repeat injection every 3 months to maintain the effect. However, after 3 to 5 injections, the effect may last longer and a repeat injection may only be needed every 6 to 12 months.

What instructions should I follow after treatment? - Do not rub the injection site for at least 4 hours as this may spread the solution to adjacent muscles. Do not lie down for at least 4 hours for the same reason. Exercise the facial muscles by doing the full range of animated facial expressions (raise your brows, furrow your brows, frown and smile deeply) every 15 minutes for the next 2 hours. Botulinum toxin attaches better to active muscles. A small amount of people will require a higher dose than given with the first treatment to obtain an effect. If you have seen no improvements after 2 weeks, please call us to schedule a “touch up”.

Juvaderm® - Wrinkle correction and lip enhancement. For a smooth, natural look and feel that lasts.

New Juvederm® are natural Juvederm® fillers used to enhance lips and correct static wrinkle lines on the face. Juvederm® replacement therapy (CRT) is a simple, non-surgical, cosmetic treatment of facial lines, wrinkles, and scars. Juvederm® is a connective tissue, which forms support for our skin. It can be placed around the eyes, cheeks, mouth, and chin as well as on the forehead. It is also used to augment lips. It is quick and can be performed in the office with minimal discomfort. The results can be very dramatic.

Is Juvederm® Right For You? - Anyone who has acne scars, lines from sun damage or heredity, or desires fuller lips is a candidate. Basically, anyone who is concerned about his or her appearance, the typical patient is usually female (although males also have it done), ages ranging from 35 to 55.

Juvederm® is injected (into facial wrinkles, scars, or the lips) with a syringe using a small, short, needle. Some people have it performed during their lunch hour, as time off is not needed.

This procedure has been performed safely on thousands of men and women. However, CRT may NOT be right for you if you have any of the following conditions:

  • An allergy to collagen or lidocaine
  • A connective tissue disease
  • Immuno Suppression

Microdermabrasion - An exfoliation treatment, using fine crystals, to smooth facial fine lines and wrinkles.

Microdermabrasion (MDA) is a skin resurfacing treatment where fine crystals (Corundum) are blown directly onto the skin surface. The Corundum crystals and exfoliated skin cells are then removed by a gentle suction. This leaves the skin softer and smoother, with a more even skin tone. MDA stimulates cellular growth and turnover while also increasing blood flow to the tissue. The epidermal layer of the skin thickens to decrease appearance of fine lines over time. This procedure has been established in Europe for over 10 years and has become popular in the United States in the last 4 - 5 years becoming known as the “lunch hour peel”

Some of the key benefits of MDA are:

  • Non-Invasive
  • No “Down Time”
  • Chemical Free
  • Immediately Apparent Effects
  • Used For All Skin Types

The procedure for a microdermabrasion facial takes about 30 – 45 minutes in the office. The treatments are usually done at 2 week intervals for 4-6 treatments for optimal results. A maintenance treatment is then recommended every 2 months to keep your skin in excellent condition. Treatments are available for face, neck, chest, back, and hands. Almost any body area can be treated.

MDA can accomplish:

  • Softer, Smoother Skin
  • Deep Cleansing
  • Improve Hyperpigmentation
  • More Even Skin Tone
  • Soften Fine Lines
  • Minimize Non-inflammatory Acne + Chicken Pox Scars
  • Treat Enlarged Pores
